Creating a Car Safety Checklist
Creating a car safety checklist before and after you buy a car is a very good way to ensure you are safe on the road. We all want to make sure the vehicle we drive is safe for us and the people we passenger in it. In order to do this we should be aware of the safety features of any potential car purchase and be able to maintain the safety of the vehicle once we own it. The best way to do this is to write two checklists: one for before you purchase, so you can make sure the car has all the features you want and one for after, so you can keep up with your car maintenance and other items like child safety seats.
Before You Buy
Before you buy a car, consider the following safety features, how important they are to and whether or not they are available. First off, what kind of airbag system is in place? Almost any car you purchase nowadays will provide airbags for the two people in the front but if you are also going to be carrying children in the back of the vehicle you will want to protect them too. In order to do this you should look for models which provide side and curtain airbags too, or ask your dealer to have them installed on your car.
Also, what form of Electric Stability System does it have? This system uses sensors on the base of your car which kick in when your car begins to swerve, to prevent you skidding out of control. Though this is quite widespread, it is not yet standard on all vehicles so you should look into its availability. Also, make sure your car has an Anti-Lock Braking System in order to prevent your wheels from locking when you brake which can lessen your control over the car.
After You Buy
Once you own a car it is now your responsibility to maintain it and keep it working at its peak level. A healthy car is a safe car and you should make out a list to remind yourself of the number of small task you need to keep up with to keep your car ticking over. Some of these will need to be done annually, while others will be more frequent, but all of them will help you keep your vehicle safe and save you money on repairs.
Make sure to check your oil regularly. Not changing the oil in your engine will cause it to degrade and the high cost of repairs, plus the disruptive effect on your driving, could be crippling. Always make sure the oil is at the correct level by checking it at least once every six months and change it at least once a year.
You should also be checking the lights on a regular basis. Don't wait for someone else to tell you that you have a light out. Check all the lights on your car at least once every 3 months. Also, be sure to test your battery and maintain the level of water inside, clean your radiator, check your tyre pressure and clean your air filter at least twice a year in order to ensure your car is running smoothly.
Creating a car safety checklist is highly advisable for anyone who wants to buy a car with the right level of safety and maintain that level throughout their ownership. All it takes is a little planning ahead and a little bit of time but making up a checklist will keep you safe on the roads. That's not to mention the money it'll save on needless repairs.
