Getting an Advanced Driver's License

Getting an advanced driver's license has some very good benefits to it. By passing an advanced drivers test you will be able to drive more careful and economically. This means you will avoid damaging your car, you will save fuel and you will be a lot safer on the road - you may also be able to save on insurance policies. With your improved driving skills you will also be able to get to your destinations a lot quicker than you did before as well as just generally impress people with your driving ability.

Before you go and take your advanced driver test however there are a few things that you already need to have in place. One is obviously a full UK driving licence, ideally that you have had for a year, although this is not always a requirement. You also always need to have less than nine points on your driving licence to show your examiner that have a history of good driving conduct. With regards to your car requirements, your vehicle must be taxed and insured with an up to date MOT certificate.

Before You Take the Course

If you meet all of these requirements you can start taking an advanced driving course at any centre which is certified by either the Institute of Advanced Motorists or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. Both of these organisations overlook advanced driving courses around the country and with a quick internet search you should be able to find plenty of centres which will offer the course. Once you have found one you can go and visit them or give them a call to talk about the process of getting onto a course. One thing you may be wondering about is the price of these sorts of courses. The price will vary from one centre to the next but the average price is around one hundred pounds.

So if you have decided to go for the course and pay the fee you may be wondering what the assessments of the course is going to involve and what exactly are you going to have to do to get your advanced driver licence. Advanced driving courses have a structure that is quite similar to a normal driving licence course. Your instructor will firstly take a look at your driving skill by going out in the car with you and seeing how you drive.

After this, you go on a course for several weeks where you will be told about the advanced driving test and what it involves. In these weeks your lessons will usually be for one hour, once a week. After a few weeks your instructor will take you for a test drive to see how you have come along and check whether you are ready for the advanced driving test. If they believe you are ready to undertake the test they will let you know and you can book it.

What Will The Test Be?

The test will cover a range of different things which will be included in your original driving test but with harsher criteria to mark on. It will also include a few new things which would have not been on your original driving test. To find out about the test and course in more detail you will have to talk to an instructor about how you should prepare and how hard the test is. That being said, for most people who have passed their driving test and have not got into bad driving habits, getting an advanced driver's license should not be that hard to do.
