Staying Alert While at the Wheel

If you are driving for a long periods of time you can often start to get sleepily or bored which means your brain turns to switch off which is incredibly dangerous if you are driving with your family. This is the case particularly when you are driving on a motorway where everyone is driving at the same sort of pace and you do need to concrete as hard as you would do if you were navigating through inner city or countryside roads. For this reason it is important that you are aware of a few things you to do to keep yourself alert whilst behind the wheel.

First and foremost you should be prepared for the long journey by taking a few things with you that will keep you alert. Bringing some food, ice, chewing gum and energy drinks with you along with some loud, fast and upbeat music is a good way for you to prepare for a long journey in the car. All of these things can help you stay alert and awake whilst you are driving in the car. Eating food will engage you a more than staring endlessly at the road. By eating your brain is focusing on something else and as a result you are more alert, after all it's pretty difficult to fall asleep whilst you are eating.

If you do decide to eat whilst you are driving, make sure you do without taking your attention off the road and eat slowly. By eating quickly your body is going to focus on digesting all of that food, this is going take energy from your body which will make you feel tired. This is the reason why someone will feel tired after having a big meal. By eating slowly your body is going to be steadily and progressively digesting the food, and you are going to be providing your body with a steady source of energy.

Ice & Energy Drinks

If you do not feel like eating food, eating ice is oddly enough quite intense, as the coldness of the ice gives quite an acute sensation to your brain and taste buds which keeps you more awake and alert. If neither eating food or ice sounds appealing and you would rather do something a little more pleasant you can always chew on some gum. Chewing gum is another activity which requires your brain to be constantly working as you are moving your jaw all the time.

This means you are less likely to switch off because you are not just staring into space and driving. The use of energy drinks is quite self-explanatory, drink enough of them and you will be alert and unable to sleep even if you are bored and not doing anything. But be sure not to drink one all at once or too much because if you do this, although you will be wide awake for some type, when the effects wear off you are likely to crash which may make you even more tired than you where before.

Listen To Music

Finally the use of loud, upbeat and fast music is going to keep your brain and alert and active. Turning the volume up and singing along will mean you are focusing on more than just driving and could get you pumped up and feeling active which means your body will find it difficult to fall asleep. If you follow these simple tips for staying alert while at the wheel you should not be in too much trouble. But if you really feel like you need to sleep then park somewhere safe and convenient and rest for a while.
