Teaching Your Children Safe Driving Habits
As a parent one of the biggest worries you may have is about the safety of your child which is why you get child safety locks and proper child seats. Making sure that they are wearing protective gear when using their bike, making sure they check the road twice before crossing the road are just a couple of things that a good parent will always try to encourage their kids to consider. Nowadays making sure your children know safe driving habits is another really important habit for your child to learn about.
Put Your Seat-belt On
A core and basic principle that every child has to know about when they get into a car is to put on their seat-belt. As any parent that drives will know, telling your child to put on their seat-belt is usually a frequent occurrence. To get your child to do this without thinking can be difficult because kids often see it as an annoying task to have to do. Getting your child to stop thinking of it in this way and do it automatically may take you a while. Many parents will tell their child to put on their seat-belt many times, only for them to do it but completely forgot about it afterwards.
If this happens your child could be getting use to the habit of being told to put on their seat-belt on rather than doing it themselves. A potential way around this is to get in the car and if your child does not put on their seat belt just sit in your seat and do not say anything. At first your child may ask what you are waiting for, and you can lightly remind them that you are waiting for something. If they do not get the hint, point it out to them in a calm way if you can. They may begrudgingly do it but this technique can work better than simply telling them to put it on over and over again.
Once you have done this once your child will know that if you get in the car and you are not doing anything, they have forgotten to put their seat belt on. With any luck this practise will become part of the child's habits and they will know that putting on their seat-belt is a prerequisite for getting anywhere. Soon enough they will always be doing it whether you are there or not.
Other Safety Habits
Another very important safe driving habit to teach your kids is about stopping them from opening a car door whilst they are driving. Most cars will have child safety locks on their rear doors so luckily if kids do decide to open up a car door it is often not going to led to anything serious. But there are some cars which do not have them and it is for this reason that getting your child into the habit of never opening the door when it driving is very important. The technique used on getting your child to put on their seat-belt is little harder to implement with this safety habit so repetition of the point might be the best way to do it.
Teaching your children safe driving habits is best to do when they are young and are willing to listen. Getting a 15 year old teenager to listen to you, is a job that is easier said than done for most parents. By getting your kids into these safety habits early on, it is going to be better for everyone and save you a lot stress and worry.
