Teenage Car Cover Options

A very welcome bit of news in the eyes of parents of teenagers all across the UK is that teen car cover options are not necessarily as limited as they probably fear. Because of the perceived limitation of options and perceived exorbitant costs, parents' reaction to the approaching date on which a teen earns his or her licence is similar to how they felt when they first began to drive with infants in the car, and may be substantially different from that teenager's personal reaction. Even as they are happy for their child's progression and accomplishments, parents naturally have to consider price factors that are far from the minds of many teenagers just acquiring their licences.

The usual standard when a teen son or daughter comes of age and passes the necessary test is to add this teen to the parents' existing policy. This particular common "limitation" is in truth no limitation at all. By having your son added to your policy, your own driving history and loyalty as a customer may help him out to a certain degree. There is no guarantee in this regard, and insurers are different in their criteria of both acceptance and assigning discounts. It stands to reason, however, that if you have been with a company, with a fairly unscathed record to your name, for a lengthy period of time, your children will reap some advantages in entering this policy as opposed to needing to start fresh on their own.

Expectations for Rates

While there are many steps that can be taken to offset the risen expense, it is undeniably true that you are likely to encounter a price increase upon adding a teen to your policy. Part of this, of course, stems from the inevitable increase that would accompany adding any driver, regardless of age and level of experience, to your existing policy. Another part of it arises from your son or daughter's status as a new and comparatively inexperienced driver. As you are probably aware from originally establishing cover with the company who currently provides your insurance, companies take many risk factors into account before approving new customers, and before determining rates.

Your existing insurer will have to account for the fact that your family's teenage driver has much less time under his or her belt at navigating the motorways than you, and the other adult drivers they insure, do. Teens constitute an extremely high-risk demographic for cover companies, in no small part because there is a certain tendency toward distraction that is taken into account. Most younger motorists are every bit as inexperienced at tuning out distractions while driving as they are at calmly steering around a sharp angle in the road. Concerning certain elements that work against you securing cover for low rates, such as the typical tendency toward preoccupation, it proves difficult to show a current or potential insurer that your teenager is different and warrants lower rates. You will more easily be able to present an argument in other realms, however.

Pass Plus

There are relatively few discounts you can count on a new driver securing. Again, all insurers are different and not legally bound to abide by uniform standards, which is fortunate for customers seeking competitive rates. There are certain general principles, however, that apply in a majority of cases. Many insurers, for instance, will reward a teen driver who has successfully completed the driver training course known as Pass Plus with a discount. Teen car cover options and the prices you will pay for any selected option depend partially on the type of car your child will drive, whether Pass Plus has been taken, and the specific coverage amount you choose.
