Using the Emergency Lights

Operating the Lights
First of all, you need to know where your emergency light switch or button is located. There is a symbol shaped like a triangle, usually coloured red, with a smaller red triangle inside of it that will indicate where your emergency light switch or button is, so if you have never taken the time to find it, hop into your car and search for it. It is usually fairly easy to find and access, as you may have to turn it on at a moment's notice. Typically, you can find this switch on your directional lights handle, or somewhere else on the dashboard. Depending on the model of car you have, you might also find it closer to the center console. Wherever it is located, you need to make sure that you find it and remember where it is in case of an emergency.
You may run into many different reasons to use your emergency lights, so it is important to know when you should use them. You should always activate your emergency lights if you are pulled over on the side of the road, whether because of the police or because of car trouble. This will indicate to other drivers that your car is stopped so they can avoid you. You will also want to activate these lights if you get a flat tyre and are riding on a small spare tyre. The top speed for small spare tyres is fairly low, so you will be moving slower than the traffic around you. If you have your emergency lights activated and are on the road, this will indicate to other drivers that you are driving with car trouble, so they will know to go around you.
Safety at Night
These lights are especially helpful for safety at night if you find yourself stranded on the side of the motorway or street. Cars will avoid you, and police will know that you are experiencing an emergency, prompting them to stop and help you. The flashing of your emergency lights can provide safety to you when you are changing a flat tyre on the side of the road at night, or alert other vehicles to the fact that you need assistance. Who knows, you might get another driver to stop and help you if they can see that you are experiencing and emergency.
